Lumiere: Documentary: "The Singing Revolution" Message-ID: Hello Extropes, David Harris just told me about an upcoming documentary, that I think is very special, to be shown soon, in your area in S.F. Don't miss it! "The Singing Revolution" San Francisco, CA, May 2nd - May 8th at the Landmark Lumiere. I saw this film at the Boulder International Film Festival last February, and it lives up to its promises; it is one of those rare films that stays in your mind forever. Here is the trailer for the film: http://www.singingrevolution.com/ Here is my own brief experience with that time in history: http://www.amara.com/Independence/LestWeForget.html Most of the film were events of which I was very familiar, but there were a few pleasant surprise-events too. Here is Steve Jurvetson's summary, and also of his readers: (including me) http://flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/1419219274/ Jurvetson's readers give more links to reviews where the movie has played. Following, are words from the film's producers. Amara -------- Original Message -------- Subject: "The Singing Revolution" Opening in San Francisco, CA May 2nd - May 8th! Date: Tue, 01 Apr 2008 21:03:26 +0000 From: maureen at singingrevolution.com Dear Friends, We're excited to tell you that the feature documentary The Singing Revolution will be opening in San Francisco, CA, May 2nd - May 8th at the Landmark Lumiere! If the film does well, the theater may keep it longer. For theater information and tickets, visit: http://www.landmarktheatres.com/Market/SanFrancisco/SanFrancisco_Frameset.htm We are writing to you because you live in the greater San Francisco area and indicated an interest in The Singing Revolution by signing-up on our website. Thank you! We think you will be inspired and energized by the remarkable events in Estonia in the late-1980s. The New York Times made the film a coveted "NYT Critics' Pick" and alludes to "Casablanca" when describing The Singing Revolution: http://movies.nytimes.com/2007/12/14/movies/14revo.html Please help spread the word about the film opening. If you'd like some postcards and flyers about the film to hand out, just let us know. Word of mouth is how we've gotten this far, and it's why the film is being held over in other cities! Hope you can make it to see The Singing Revolution opening May 2nd - May 8th in San Francisco, CA. Additional openings in other cities are listed on the website. Thank you! You have touched my emotions: I'm not linked in to this culture as someone like you or Steve. But I do love my memories of Estonia and the two weeks I was in Tallinn. The Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts invited local opera singers, folk singers, orchestra and theater to preform for us on four separate occasions. I had never before witnessed such enthusiasm, joy and respect for a culture's traditions and such hope for the future of Tallinn as a design center. Thanks for this post. But I do love my memories of Estonia and >the two weeks I was in Tallinn. One aspect of this film that I think is worth to keep in mind is that the other two Baltic republics: Latvia and Lithuania, had their similar stories running in parallel to the story in Estonia. If one uses the example of the Latvian dainas as evidence of their singing tradition, then Latvia's singing tradition goes back before Mesopotamia times (according to some historians), for example. So in my mind the Baltic revolutions should _all_ be called "The Singing Revolution". But there is a reason that more people attach the label to Estonia: there were no deaths in that revolution, like there were in Lithuania and Latvia. The film focuses only on Estonia for another reason: the people funding the Tustys wanted that particular Estonian story, which was already rich with material. Mr. Tusty had a tough time editing it to the two hours that he finally produced. He said in February at the Boulder Film Festival that he will release this Fall a DVD with supplementary material. I read it when the count went up. I never said I always respond right away when it goes up. :-) I was getting to know my Russian MD woman online and then having a first date and a tour of the Stanford Med School area. I delayed responding until I knew what I wanted to say. Now I'll ask her about May 2 and 7. She had a verbal job offer on Tuesday for a Berkeley job as a physician's assistant, and might be keeping the decks clear in case she has to learn a lot of new procedures or language. I hope to know by this coming Monday what she says. Maybe we could use my car to go to SF and pick her up to go as a trio. - David > > May 6th is taken now -- are you and your > friend free on Friday May 2nd or Wednesday > May 7th? > > On Apr 18, 2008, at 12:36 AM, David C.
