From sentience at pobox.com Tue Feb 22 20:13:43 2005 From: sentience at pobox.com (Eliezer S. Yudkowsky) Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 12:13:43 -0800 Subject: [Exi-bay-chat] A Bay Area transhumanist get-together at 5PM, Sunday March 6th? Message-ID: <421B9277.2030301@pobox.com> I am now mostly settled in to my new apartment in Santa Clara (I'm near the intersection of Lawrence and Homestead), and I would like to meet my fellow Bay Area transhumanists. I also hear rumors that there are no frequent regular gatherings of Bay Area transhumanists. Spike Jones and I have secretly conspired to launch a quarterly meeting of Bay Area transhumanists, which conspiracy I now throw open to the general public. I've been to transhumanist gatherings held at restaurants and I've been to transhumanist gatherings held at houses, and the house gatherings were much nicer: people can walk around and talk to all others present, sit down for a few minutes and then get up, and there's no loud music playing as there often is at restaurants. In restaurants I've usually been able to speak only to the four or five people seated nearest me. Unfortunately I can't offer my own house, because I don't have a house, I have a small apartment, and I've no space (nor chairs, tables, etc.) for even a small transhumanist gathering. Would anyone out there like to host this occasion? It wouldn't imply offering to host every quarterly gathering (unless you want to); there's no reason the gathering shouldn't move around. Similarly, potluck dinner (everyone brings an item they would want to eat) can substitute for any obligation to prepare food. We'd just need space and chairs. My current nominal bedtime is 9PM; I can probably stretch that an hour or two on any given night, so long as I don't do it twice in a row. What do you think of 5PM as a meeting time? -- Eliezer S. WOW cool! Intersection of Laurence and Homestead! By sheer coincidence you have landed withing walking distance of another prominent transhumanist and all-around good guy, who I will not name until I clear with him that it is OK for the world knowing approximately where he lives. {8^D Good for you bud, thats a nice area to live. I used to live over that way when I rented an apartment. Couldn't afford an actual house there. You are also within walking distance of the Santa Clara library, the spanking new one, a terrific facility, a very nice example of what local governments *should* be doing with all the money they take from us. March 6th sounds cool, but I need to check the old calendar before offering my place. spike From mark_galeck at pacbell.net Wed Feb 23 05:29:52 2005 From: mark_galeck at pacbell.net (Mark Galeck) Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 21:29:52 -0800 Subject: [Exi-bay-chat] A Bay Area transhumanist get-together at 5PM, Sunday March 6th? It would be even nicer if everybody put some TLC into the food they bring, but even with that absent from some offerings, it still beats a restaurant. I also commend you for picking a location to live that is near the center of the known universe. I see Spike Jones wants to host this meeting. I can also host one in the future. Like you, I live in a 700ft2 apartment, but in my case, I can reserve the very nice rec room, after 5:30 on a weekend, in my apartment complex in Sunnyvale, with fridge, microwave, dining ware, restrooms, inside and poolside tables, heated pool (April-November), big hot-tub. The only drawbacks are: we can't drink ethanol-related beverages without bringing a public safety officer along (Sunnyvalese for cop), and the manager will hold me responsible for cleaniness of the place afterwards, (which means everybody has to pay more attention to not messing up, than if it were my apartment). At one of the local gatherings I am sure we met, a sushi place probably, my brain is essentially memoryless for people and names. I have never been to a Foresight schmooze, I usually don't go to conferences that cost money, I prefer to spend it on other things. "Nerdfest at Stanford" - what is that, can you tell me? >buying the beer for the whole table at one of those. That would be about the last thing I see myself doing :) I am way too health-conscious to drink; ethanol is just first on a long list of things I don't take into my body. Wait! Actually I do drink beer - sort of. I consume copious amounts of Brewer's yeast (very healthy) and then in my stomach it dissolves and ferments, right? - some of my friends say in this way I drink a lot of beer! So all is not lost.
