I partake in (veggie) potlucks, and a frequent question comes up: how much to cook? "4 servings" or anything like that, is not a good answer for obvious reasons- what is a "serving" and why 4? The proper answer is "cook as much as you would want to eat if you were by yourself" From bronto at pobox.com Wed Mar 2 01:18:29 2005 From: bronto at pobox.com (Anton Sherwood) Date: Tue, 01 Mar 2005 17:18:29 -0800 Subject: [Exi-bay-chat] a bouncer Message-ID: <42251465.6030509@pobox.com> Does anyone know echilds at linex.com ? The nominal theme of this gathering is "Eliezer's Welcome Party" and I hope to meet my many new neighbors. To ease the burden on our gracious host, the dinner is potluck - bring as much food as you'd like to eat yourself, and we'll share. Interested in hosting a future gathering? The last time Spike held a transhumanist gathering, he graciously grilled goodies for us. This time it's potluck. Hence, you should bring an appetite that corresponds to how much you trust your fellow transhumanists. -- Eliezer S. Definitely don't spend the whole time fooling with cooking. There's also the concept of putting all the chairs out on the patio and letting the conversation congeal around it; much more easily done once the weather is better. > > Great schmooze! Oh well, I'm sure it will come to me. {8^D Some people inspire that sort of behavior; I've seen it happen around Harlan Ellison and David Brin at SF cons, for example. The configuration is nearly always a ring with the Person Of Note along the circumference, so everyone can hear. Points that The Last Supper definitely a photo-op -- the Apostles were not arranged for optimal listening, or food passing either, but none of them wanted the back of his head in the picture :-) . > > Great seeing you guys again!
