I was wondering, is this a new industry term, combining "animated" with
some other word? I hadn't heard this usage of "automated" before.

For a while, I had my TiVo recording "Tripping the Rift" but it's
painfully un-funny. (And I have a very forgiving threshhold.) It's all
sophomoric (minus the sophistry) sex humor that's probably only funny to
13-year-olds. I think the humor was generated by a one-tape Turing machine.
  Automated indeed.
