What is always in the back (and often up front) of my
mind is Nietzsche's writing on the "will to power".
When you think of how there are people in the world
who would destroy the entire biosphere in a nuclear
war, for the sake of pursuing power (though not
necessarily power for themselves personally) it is
enough to make you want to build a fallout shelter in
the basement.
