Many of us enjoy a good science fiction book or movie for its novel
ideas. I can think of several examples where sex did play an integral
role or added depth to the plot, but when the gratuitous sex scene comes
along, it can be extremely distracting to have part of one's mind point
out that the scene serves no purpose other than marketing and hooking
the audience--now customer--in the same way as many of the commercials
on TV.
