Many of us enjoy a good science fiction book or movie for its novel 
ideas.  I can think of several examples where sex did play an integral 
role or added depth to the plot, but when the gratuitous sex scene comes 
along, it can be extremely distracting to have part of one's mind  point 
out that the scene serves no purpose other than marketing and hooking 
the audience--now customer--in the same way as many of the commercials 
on TV.
