Pandora's box is often used as a metaphor for this meme. As you know, it stems from greek mythology. The box contained diseases, sorrows and misfortunes that the gods imprisoned to keep away from mankind. In case it was opened, the gods also kept a brighter spirit amongst the evil ones - hope.
