Perhaps various cultures all over the place discovered
fossilized dinosaurs.  Hadrosaurs lived over most of the
globe, so the bones aren't all that rare.  Could be a
simpler explanation too: they found elephant leg bones
without ever seeing an elephant, or whale skulls perhaps.
