DARPA solicits proposals for insect-sized nano air vehicle program: Industry
is being asked to take cues from the makeup of fluttering insects and
hummingbirds, for a new Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency program
seeking to field a small unmanned aerial vehicle that could be used to
breach interiors to transmit data without being detected. In an Oct. 25
solicitation, posted on the Federal Business Opportunities Web site, DARPA
announced it is soliciting proposals for a Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program,
that would produce a "very small, very lightweight" UAV. The agency said it
envisions the NAV system to be based on conventional, as well as
non-conventional air vehicle designs. More specifically, DARPA said the
"wingspan" of the vehicle should be smaller than 3 inches, and the platform
should weigh less than 10 grams and be able to travel three to seven meters
per second. (Inside the Army)
