Not my expression. Still --

artifice: a clever trick or stratagem. Cunning; ingenuity; guile; craftiness.

Although up here it doesn't seem very clever. Twenty feet after a gas 
station is another that's charging thirty cents a gallon more. A 
driver can see both stations' signs with sufficient time to choose 
the cheaper alternative.
