Having as complex a developmental history as she does often means she's subject to the assumptions other people make, as well as subject to what might be termed the "tyranny of stereotype".  I've had a bit of this myself as well, with respect to a whole lot of things (including just being female!).  Some people's real lives really are so outside what most people would expect that all attempts to apply the usual person-appraisal heuristics fail miserably.  It doesn't make those lives any less real -- it just means that reality is bigger and more complicated than a lot of people give it credit for most of the time.
