The Amish serve as a memetic diversity preserve. Similar groups
include Civil War re-enactors, the Society for Creative Anarchronism,
black powder weapons enthusiasts, fencers, monasteries, nuclear
weapons designers, and so on. They do not consume overwhelming amounts
of resources (excepting the last two). Allowing the expression of
their memes preserves this against future need.
