I think people know instinctively that the will is the essence of the
person.

Consider the typical first date. After exchanging pleasantries and perhaps
a brief background check, the would-be lovers launch immediately into a
query of the wills:

What do you like to do for fun?
What do you choose to do for a living?
What did you choose to study in school?
Where do you like to go on vacation?
What kind of movies do you like?
What kind of books do you like?
What's your favorite subject?
Who's your favorite author?
What's your favorite book?
What kind of music do you like?
What's your favorite band?
What's your favorite song?
(sometime around here the conversation gets heavier)
What do you want in a relationship?
What are your goals?
(etcetera, so on and so forth)

The answers to all these questions answer the more general question:

"What is your will in life?"

Your date wants to know, because that's who you are.
