The "shared existance" sounds like a short story by Kevin J Anderson called
"Job Qualifications" in which a candidate running for President "of Earth"
creates several clones of himself and has them doing various jobs from
forced labor in a prison camp to a waiter at a "retro"  diner to ... a
doctor to a bureaucrat.
