This is not strictly true. The Jewish matrimonial regime used to be
polygamous in biblical times. and some forms of semi-official poligamy
*and* poliandry were not entirely unknown in different christian
countries of the old world, even though never really in Northern
America, where the emphasis on reciprocal sexual exclusivity has
always be, as far as I can tell, rather strong, at least in the
mainstream.
