To put it concisely in terms that will make it easy to digest:    
Would anyone here like the Christian Fundamentalist wing of the  
Republican party legislating what healthcare you may or may not  
receive?  It takes but a single election...

When you give the government a power, you give it to both your best  
political allies and your worst political enemies.  If you don't mind  
your worst political enemies dictating your healthcare, then by all  
means give them the power because eventually that power will rest in  
their hands.
