Indeed they are, but are we even on that road now?

Second Ending has at least a fine AI or two - a whole cadre of them! :)

And Seedling Stars has off-world adapted humans, specifically bred/created for the
purpose of colonizing the other worlds.

But *we* have to be careful with stem-cell research for treating paralysis or
diabetes...
