This looks just like the kind of "frog in boiling water" fable that 
sounds illuminating but is invented:

These gullible peer group-driven monkeys are all over the web, btw; 
snopes doesn't seem to have investigated the story yet, but I'd be 
more ready to believe it if there'd been some documentation attached...
