This is one of those fields where I wonder why there hasn't been a major breakthrough since the Miller-Urey Experiment.  (At least, that's how it seems to me.  I admit I haven't closely followed the field, but I'm aware of some of the major hypotheses.  It's just that all of these seem to remain abstract.)
