It may well have been in the interest of single politicians to support
the process, or at least not to resist it. And/or it may even have
corresponded to their ideological biases and of to various influences
they were subject to.
It remains in fact to be seen whether this was in the best interest of
the political regime(s) they were part of, let alone of the people
they were deemed to represent.
