Figuring it would raise credibility, I have been trying to put
together a list of technical developments that would wipe out the
rational for building power satellites.

This is because a lot of people who could be involved in this business
have the fairly fresh memory of Iridium going bust.  In that case it
was because much of their market was eaten by cell phones.

To start off, the development and acceptance of very low cost nuclear
energy would wipe out the market for power sat energy more expensive
than the nuclear energy.

What other cases can you think of?
