under "natural" conditions, then yes, we are degenerating. If you
value e.g. the communal ability to build a complex technological
civilization (whose intellectual offspring might be able to survive
calamities guaranteed to wipe out Neanderthals, such as major asteroid
strikes or the sun going red giant), then we are rapidly progressing.

All doesn't matter much anyway, since in a few decades the dominant
sentients on this planet will be able to choose the attributes of
their physical manifestations. They could even manifest as hairy
ape-men, should they feel the need to burn resources on such a folly.
