The meaning of a symbol is simply its association with another symbol.
I do not know what you mean by "understanding", but you can associate
symbols with whatever method.
Your brain - which usually should not require fingers to perform such
calculation :-) - does not do anything really different from a
computer CPU when it understands that the "meaning" of x is 3 and that
of y is 4 and concludes that their sum is 7.
It may do so in a slightly less efficient way, but the process remains
obviously computational.
