The novel I was reading is Robert Sawyer's WWW: WATCH (sequel to WWW: 
WAKE), with a forthcoming vol next year; it's a charming tale of the 
emergent AI consciousness of the internet in 2014. One of the characters 
is a signing bonobo-chimp hybrid, Hobo Bonobo...
