Someone needs to reread Descartes' seminal work on how,
exactly, this can happen - and in theory could be
happening today.  (Granted, his work is more well known
for proving that it is impossible to logically prove or
disprove this condition.  It's also couched in more
mystical than technological speak - not surprising,
given when it was written.  That aside, it does show
how this could happen.)
