Hmm, I don't really think that someone's willingness to do without a backup plan is indicative of their commitment to something.

For some people, their 'pension plan' is a cryonics contract, and some think the future will arrive later than generally anticipated, but still within their expected lifespan, and they might well need a pension of some kind in the meantime.  That doesn't mean they're not convinced that the desired future won't happen.
