It can be done with compact fluorescents, although at somewhat greater cost:

LED's are even more energy efficient than CFL's: up to twice as much
light output for a given power input, and lasting up to ten times as
long before needing to be replaced. They can also be electronically
dimmed quite easily. However, they are more expensive at present, and
they are not as good at rendering colours as incandescents and
fluorescents.
