Wasn't the homo line (from the hypothesized homo/pan split) also in
different niches at this point too? I'm not sure of the research done on pan
genus itself
-- in terms of its evolution -- but I was under the impression that it was
limited to dense forests -- while the homo line was exploring many different
niches, some of them not dense forests.

Ja, clearly the pan's feet are better adapted for swinging from trees and
homo's feet are better for walking distances on a grassy plane.  Good point
Dan.  For that matter, as pointed out by someone earlier, pan's hands are
not as good as homo's at grasping a burning bush.  Pan's thumbs are mounted
too far aft.
