There was a book I read a long time ago called Davita's Harp, by Chaim
Potok.  It was the third of a trilogy which included The Chosen and The
Promise, a prequel to the other two.  Interesting thing about it is that he
did it in first person as a female.  All his other first person narrators
were male characters.  Somehow he made it work.
