A book I found helpful on this question was The Evolution of Morality by
Richard Joyce. I haven't read On the Genealogy of Morals, though I shall. I
did read Beyond Good and Evil and remember being struck by
Nietzsche's assertion that it is nothing more than a moral prejudice that
truth is worth more than semblance.
