You get my workplace when the phones are busy. People call in, and you can hear nothing but several phone conversations at once. Noise doesn't stop the modern office. Also, voice-activated computers currently exist for automated phone lines, more sophisticated ones could replace call centres.

Finally, thinking how many people were talking to themselves in my local coffee shop this morning (well, maybe they were talking to someone on their mobile phone using hands-free, but I think they're all crazy people sent to annoy me while I go to get a drink) you'll be surprised how much noise and social annoyance people can take.
