Fyi: there has been many emails going back and forth off list on Stephenson
and his project at ASU.  When I read it I was shocked by a disparaging
comment he made about nanotech and steel being better choice.  He mocked
those interested in emerging/speculative technologies, and especially the
singularity.  Anyway, I just read this:

Too bad the author didn't tell him to stop being so pessimistic!
