Notice that what you're doing is exactly the thing which
would happen to self-rep systems capable of leaving the
solar system.

Consider a series of dishes with sterilized drosophila food,
in a tunnel many megameters long. The first flies to emerge 
from the other end are nothing like what you put in first.
