I don't think that's an entirely accurate restatement of Clark's work.

What the evidence showed was that the children of the rich were
substantially more likely to survive to the date the male parent's
will was probated.  It's speculative, but it's probable this was
because they had a better diet and their parents could provide food
through the frequent famines.

The poor may have had equal fecundity, but their kids had a lower
chance of surviving.  Poor and inadequate diet leaves children unable
to fight off diseases.
