You just solved the Fermi paradox!

After a certain level of tech is reached and everyone has enough to
live comfortably, then there is a gradual shift to people saying,--
'Well I've got enough now, I don't need more stuff. Let's just drink
some Valpolicella and play in virtual reality!'   ;)
