This scenario is playing out currently on the TV show Extant with an AI named Taylor (or TALR or some such acronym). It's ambiguous right now if the AI is making life and death decisions on its own or if it's being controlled/influenced by a human. I think someone who hasn't followed the series would find this aspect of a current episode interesting. It's good stuff.
