It is known that the opposite effect happens: beautiful people are
perceived as smarter.

I do know of one case in which it is harmful to be good-looking:  if a
woman is charged with a crime and it appears that she has somehow used her
looks to commit that crime, she is judged more harshly than a plainer
looking woman.  It might be the same for men - I dunno. bill w
