No, I mean software can be cobbled together by volunteer teams and it costs nothing to replicate and distribute.  So it can (and usually does) get cheaper and go all the way to free eventually.  Hardware cannot and does not do that, ever.  Plenty of free software is remarkably competent.  Good examples are plentiful, but some that I use are Khan Academy, CodeAcademy, ChessFree and MapMyRide.
