I thought of another reason for picking M87, it's located near the equator
so radio telescopes in both hemispheres can see it but the center of the
Milky Way  can only be seen in the southern hemisphere. The resolution they
achieved is really amazing, it's equivalent to reading the date on a dime
in Los Angeles from New York. Another record they achieved is the fastest
data transfer when they put several tons of state of the art hard drives on
a 747 and flew them across the atlantic.
