[ExI] instinct

I joined this list too late to get in the discussion of the Rational
Optimist, by Matt Ridley.  I am re-reading it now and have a big problem
with him.  So, if you would be so kind, please take a moment and give my
your definition of the word 'instinct'.  Precise or vague does not matter.
I just want to know your everyday understanding of the term, after which I
will share my thoughts on the matter.
