Bill-

Not sure if you're asking why they're there or why you're asked to shorten
them.  If it's the former, they're typically add ons for tracking things
like how someone got to the site (from a newsletter for example), or
other tracking attributes.   If it's the latter, some people just don't
like dealing with longer urls for copy/paste, etc.  It's a personal
preference.

If you want to shorten urls across the board without editing, you can use a
service like tinyurl.com which lets you paste in the full link and it will
shorten it for you to a very succinct one.
