Red Rider BB guns do that, since BBs have eye-seeking technology but rubber bullets seldom have such technology.

 

Perhaps it is a rifle which can be swung like a baseball bat, to swat some reprehensible villain or victim, which would meet my understanding of the term “assault” but not a fixed-emplacement anti-aircraft weapon such as an M-60 or a T-44, which are too big and bulky to be used in that bizarre manner.

 

When you hear the answer to this, a lotta stuff will start to make sense.
