Humans are (at best) social semi-domesticated wild animals. Whatever
psychological traits we have they are the result of natural selection,
mostly in the stone age.

So what is the evolved function of being able to hold nonsense beliefs
like this one?

The logical math model for prehistory human populations was growth and
(mostly due to weather) periodic starvation or wars that cut the
population back. Of course, if it was possible to move, people did
that, which is why humans spread over the entire planet.

I make the case that humans were strongly selected for the traits to
go to war when the population to resource ratio was unfavorable (or
looked like it would be). Belief in the others being bad guys (who
had to be killed) was part of the process that worked the tribe's
warriors up to a do or die attempt to kill the neighbors.

The guy who went into the pizza restaurant with a weapon was far out
on the bell curve, but not entirely atypical.

The Russian bots may be amplifying this "social movement" but why now?
