John, the way I see it is that whoever that hypothetical different
person would be, they wouldn't be you. That's my answer whenever I'm
asked if I ever regret anything I've done in my life. If I had done
things differently, I would have turned out different, and that
different person wouldn't be who I am now.
No regrets, either about what you did or how you came to be. Be thankful
(to yourself) to have turned out as you.
I'm not, of course, saying don't strive to better yourself (that would,
on this list, be blasphemy :-D ), just don't have any bad feelings about
things in the past.
