Billw, regarding the Packing for Mars book, is it about standard astronaut training or is it specifically about training for Mars?  This is a critical difference, because the weight calculations are still telling us that any trip to the Mars surface with humans is one-way.  We have no currently-known technology for getting back up to Mars orbit from the surface.
