*(from Premium True) Message in a Bottle — 21st Century Remix:* Four
adults and a 6-month-old baby had driven to see the Blencoe Falls in
Queensland, Australia. “Coming back down, only about 20 kilometers [12.4
miles] from the bottom,” said State Emergency Service area controller James
Gegg, “they crossed one of the many creeks and unfortunately swamped the
car.” Stranded, the man tried to call for help, but had no signal. But he
did have a drone. He typed an SOS text message, attached the phone to the
drone, and sent it up. “When he brought [the drone] back down he confirmed
the message had been sent, so he did get reception,” Gegg said. “That
raised the alarm.” The rescue highlighted the need to plan ahead. “We
highly recommend people going into remote areas to purchase a personal
locator beacon,” Gegg said. “They’re fairly inexpensive and they can get an
emergency alert out very quickly with your exact GPS location.” (MS/ABC
Australia) *...It may be quicker, but it’s not nearly as cool.*
