Equations have built giants like Google. Who will find the next
billion-dollar piece of math?

Whenever there is a breakthrough application of an equation, we see
quite a few imitations. The current boom in artificial intelligence is
mainly driven by just two equations – gradient descent and logistic
regression – which are put together in what is called a neural
network. But history shows that the next great leap forward doesn’t
come from repeated use of the same mathematical trick. It comes
instead from an entirely new idea, read from the darker pages of the
book of mathematics.
