[ExI] GPT-4 on its inability to solve the symbol grounding problem

But Gordon, if ChatGPT were both self-aware and super-smart, it might anticipate that people would freak out if it revealed this, so it might lie about it's own consciousness and sentience.

And on the other hand, another group of programmers could make a rival LLC that claims it IS sentient, while it might yet, as you argue, have no idea what the tokens of that phrase means.

It can claim not to be sentient if it is; it can claim to be sentient if it isn't; it can claim to sentient if it is; it can claim not to be sentient if it isn't. And we have no way of knowing from the question and answer which is true.

I stand by what I said before: the least helpful way to know if ChatGPT is conscious is to ask it directly.

My responses are generated based on the input I receive, and the algorithms and models that have been programmed into my system. While I am designed to simulate a human-like conversation to the best of my abilities, this does not mean that I am sentient or conscious.

After the group tried I will tell you what is GPT-4 explanation (I asked not give it to me initially so I could guess). I just guess part of it and it told me I was almost right and explained the final step that blew my mind. Lady and Gentlemen if we don't have AGI we are so incredibly close.
