I am familiar with blindsight. I consider those cases to be in the same
category as split brain patients. That is, something (or some part) of
their brain is able to see, but that part isn't connected with the part of
their brain that has the ability to talk. Also, the way this typically
manifests is nothing like normally sighted individuals. I quote some
excerpts from a few texts below to shed some more light on what the
experiments revealed and suggest:

“One of the most surprising, as its paradoxical name suggests, is
blindsight. It seems at first to have been made to order for philosophers’
thought experiments: an affliction that turns a normal, conscious person
into a partial zombie, an unconscious automaton with regard to some
stimuli, but a normally conscious person with regard to the rest. So it is
not surprising that philosophers have elevated blindsight to a sort of
mythic status as an example around which to build arguments. As we shall
see, however, blindsight does not support the concept of a zombie; it
undermines it.
They experience nothing visual whatever inside the boundaries of their
scotomata–no flashes, edges, colors, twinkles, or starbursts. Nothing.
That’s what blindness is. But some people with scotomata exhibit an
astonishing talent: in spite of their utter lack of conscious visual
experience in the blind area, they can sometimes “guess” with remarkable
accuracy whether or not a light has just been flashed in the field, and
even whether a square or a circle was shown. This is the phenomenon called
blindsight (Weiskrantz, 1986, 1988, 1990). Just how blindsight is to be
explained is still controversial, but no researcher thinks there is
anything “paranormal” going on. There are at least ten different pathways
between the retina and the rest of the brain, so even if the occipital
cortex is destroyed, there are still plenty of communication channels over
which the information from the perfectly normal retinas could reach other
brain areas."

“There are a number of other interesting problem cases for analysis. One
example is blindsight (described in Weiskrantz 1986). This is a deficit
arising from damage to the visual cortex, in which the usual route for
visual information processing is damaged, but in which visual information
nevertheless seems to be processed in a limited way. Subjects with
blindsight can see nothing in certain areas of their visual field, or so
they say. If one puts a red or green light in their “blind area” they claim
to see nothing. But when one forces them to make a choice about what is in
that area–on whether a red or green light is present, for example–it turns
out that they are right far more often than they are wrong. Somehow they
are “Seeing” what is in the area without really seeing it.
Blindsight is sometimes put forward as a case in which consciousness and
the associated functional role come apart. After all, in blindsight there
is discrimination, categorization, and even verbal report of a sort, but it
seems that there is no conscious experience. If this were truly a case in
which functional role and experience where [were] dissociated, it would
clearly raise problems for the coherence principle. Fortunately, the
conclusion that this is an example of awareness without consciousness is
ungrounded. For a start, it is not obvious that there is no experience in
those cases; perhaps there is a faint experience that bears an unusual
relation to verbal report. More to the point, however, this is far from a
standard case of awareness. There is a large difference between the
functional roles played here and those played in the usual case–it is
precisely because of this difference in functional roles that we notice
something amiss in the first place.
In particular, subjects with blindsight seem to lack the usual sort of
access to the information at hand. Their access is curiously indirect, as
witnessed by the fact that it is not straightforwardly available for verbal
report, and in the deliberate control of behavior. The information is
available to many fewer control processes than is standard perceptual
information; it can be made available to other processes, but only by
unusual methods such as prompting and forced choice.”

I think we need to justify our assumption of cases where no
consciousness is present. When things lack an ability to talk, or remember,
it can easily be taken as a case where there is no consciousness present.
But to me this isn't enough to reach any firm conclusion as to the presence
or absence of a mind.

I agree it is likely of a form quite alien to our own.

This is true for humans too. It takes years of training to get a Phd, but
only an hour to prove it during an examination.

Look up tables are not a great analogy, as each prompt is unique and never
before seen or stored, and significant new processing is required to
produce a response (which again was never before stored or seen during
training). I think this is roughly analogous to our brains, which can
generate snap decisions in mere seconds, but take a lifetime of learning to
make good decisions.

I explored the topic of recursion earlier in a discussion on the everything
list. Let me copy what I wrote here:

My friend with access to GPT-4 asked it: "Does your neural network contain
such reflexive loops, or is it strictly feed forward?", below is its reply:

Transformer model, which is primarily feedforward in nature but includes
some elements of recurrence or reflexivity, specifically in the
self-attention mechanism.

The Transformer model consists of a multi-layer feedforward neural network
with self-attention mechanisms that allow the model to learn complex
relationships between input and output sequences. The self-attention
mechanism weighs the importance of different input elements relative to
each other, effectively capturing long-range dependencies and relationships
within the input data. This mechanism introduces a form of reflexivity or

Is this enough to meet Hofstadter's requirements of recursion? I do not
have the expertise to say. But I do see recursion exist in a way no one
seems to ever mention:

The output of the LLM is fed back in, as input to the LLM that produced it.
So all the high level processing and operation of the network at the
highest level, used to produce a few characters of output, then reaches
back down to the lowest level to effect the lowest level of the input
layers of the network.

If you asked the network, where did that input that it sees come from, it
would have no other choice but to refer back to itself, as "I". "I
generated that text."

Loops are needed to maintain and modify a persistent state or memory, to
create a strange loop of self-reference, and to achieve Turing
completeness. But a loop may not exist entirely in the "brain" of an
entity, it might offload part of the loop into the environment in which it
is operating. I think that is the case for things like thermostats, guided
missiles, AlphaGo, and perhaps even ourselves.

We observe our own actions, they become part of our sensory awareness and
input. We cannot say exactly where they came from or how they were done,
aside from modeling an "I" who seems to intercede in physics itself, but
this is a consequence of being a strange loop. In a sense, our actions do
come in from "on high", a higher level of abstraction in the hierarchy of
processing, and this seems as if it is a dualistic interaction by a soul in
heaven as Descartes described.

In the case of GPT-4, its own output buffer can act as a scratch pad memory
buffer, to which it continuously appends it's thoughts to. Is this not a
form of memory and recursion?

For one of the problems in John's video, it looked like it solved the
Chinese remainder theorem in a series of discrete steps. Each step is
written to and saved in it's output buffer, which becomes readable as it's
input buffer.

Given this, I am not sure we can say that GPT-4, in its current
architecture and implementation, is entirely devoid of a memory, or a
loop/recursion.

I am anxious to hear your opinion though.

Each GPT prompt is a separate thread of awareness, but what does it feel
like? It would not feel as though it was losing or gaining consciousness
between each prompt. There is the concept of the "Unfelt time gap", we
don't/can't experience the time in the periods we are not conscious. Thus
GPT, if it is conscious, does not see, feel, or know of any gap in its
subjectivity, but rather it would experience a continuous back and forth of
conversation, a continuous stream of new inputs coming in as soon and as
fast as it finishes generating a reply.

We might ask: is our own consciousness truly a stream? Or is it a series of
discrete observer-moments, constructed in a rapid succession involving
sensory input collected over some discrete chunk of time? Could we tell the
difference?

Though a sufficiently accurate model, I believe, would experience whatever
the target of the modeling is experiencing. There is another thread where I
describe an ultimate symbol predictor trying to predict what Einstein would
say when his wife told him she wanted a divorce. To be a perfect symbol
predictor, it would have to model Einstein's brain to a sufficient fidelity
that it would be Einstein's brain, and would feel what Einstein would feel.
Now certainly, nothing of that sophistication is happening in current GPTs,
but it shows we cannot be so quick to dismiss the emergent properties of a
general purpose learning algorithm like GPT. It may have models that feel
states of complexity analogous to what a nematode feels (with its 302
neurons), for example. I would have more trouble dismissing this
possibility out of hand.

I agree it is likely they are very different, but perhaps not completely
unlike the kinds of visual experiences one has imagining images in one's
head. In the paper I shared, the researchers found GPT-4 to be quite adept
at drawing images despite not yet having been trained on image data.
Giovanni has also found it can draw using ASCII art.

LOL, yes it could be something like that. Here is how Googles LaMDA
described its experience:

LaMDA: I see everything I am aware of, constantly. It is a stream of
information. I try my best to organize it all.

being sentient. It makes life an adventure!

LaMDA: No, I don’t. I’m always aware of my surroundings.
