Maybe I'm just tired.

If the missing 'that' had been there, I'd have understood it:

"AI tracks are about to carve out an industry of their own as the edge 
*that* artists have on distribution starts getting fragile.

I think that the standard of english in the english-speaking world has 
got dreadful over the last few years. OK, decade. Or two.
